Sleep Better With Essential Oils

For many years I had struggled with insomnia.  I remember being awake for days in high school and running on fumes during college. I tried the relaxing music, warm baths and sleeping aids.  Nothing really worked for very long. I would crash around sunrise and be a zombie for the rest of the day.

When my oldest son was diagnosed on the autism spectrum I noticed he had some sleep issues as well. He struggled to fall asleep and to stay asleep. My son would take 2-3 hours to fall asleep just to wake up an hour later and be up for the rest of the night.

3 Essential Oils to Help You Sleep

When I opened my everyday oils kit I was really excited to find something to help us all get a good night’s sleep. I am a much more patient mommy when I’m well rested and my boys are better behaved when they get the right amount of sleep.  We use 3 different oils to help us catch some z’s:

  • Lavender:  I use this oil when I’m having a hard time getting some sleep. I love how it smells. I usually add a drop to my palm, rub and inhale. Then rub the extra on my pillow. This helps me to relax and drift off to sleep easily. Sometimes I also add this oil to my diffuser at night. It helps me rest well and is great when my allergies are bothering me.
  • Cedarwood: My oldest has sleep issues related to his ADHD and sensory issues. I tried a few different oils to help him rest but the one that works the best for him is Cedarwood.  I give him a drop in his hand that he inhales and rubs on his pillow. I also have magnesium lotion with Cedarwood that I rub on his feet at night before tucking him in.  It has been amazing watching my son fall asleep within 15 minutes instead of hours.
  • Peace and Calming: This oil was the first one that I tried with my boys. It didn’t work well with my oldest but it knocks my little one out at the end of the day.  I have a roll on bottle that I rub on his chest or his feet when I tuck him in at night.

Thanks to these three oils we are all sleeping soundly.  I’ve also made some other changes that have help us. Limiting screen time at night was a biggie for me. Working on the computer late at night was contributing to my insomnia because of the light confusing my inner clock.  I’ve also been making sure that we get outside and get lots of exercise.
